Republican Committees Urge FTC Investigation into Google’s Alleged Email Bias

On May 22, 2025, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) formally requested that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigate Alphabet Inc.’s Google, specifically its Gmail service. The committees allege that Gmail disproportionately filters Republican campaign emails into spam folders, adversely affecting their fundraising efforts.

In a letter addressed to FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) expressed concerns that Gmail’s filtering practices suppress conservative communications. They argue that, given Gmail’s substantial market share—reportedly around 75% in the U.S.—such biases could significantly hinder Republican outreach and campaign operations.

This move renews longstanding GOP accusations that major tech companies manipulate algorithms to marginalize conservative voices. The request underscores ongoing tensions between the Republican Party and Big Tech over allegations of political bias in digital platforms.
