Ethereum Simplification Needed Now, Says Vitalik Buterin

Ethereum simplification has become a top priority for Vitalik Buterin. In a new article published on May 3, he proposed reducing Ethereum’s complexity. His goal is to make the network more efficient, secure, and accessible by following Bitcoin’s minimalist model.

Ethereum Simplification Starts with the Core

Vitalik Buterin believes that Ethereum simplification is key to the network’s long-term success. In his article “The Simplification of L1,” he explained that the best way to scale and secure Ethereum is to keep things simple.

He admitted that previous upgrades made Ethereum stronger, but also harder to manage. These changes led to rising costs and a higher risk of errors. According to Buterin, Ethereum often ignored the value of simplicity, even because of his own decisions.

Making the Ethereum Protocol Easier to Use

To improve the protocol, Buterin proposed several changes. He called for standardizing tools and structures across the Ethereum ecosystem. This includes a shared method for erasure coding, a common serialization format, and a tree-based design.

Such improvements would reduce unnecessary complexity. At the same time, they would help developers build faster and more securely. Buterin wrote that simplicity supports decentralization, which is a core value of blockchain.

Ethereum Faces Real Competition

This call for Ethereum simplification comes as Ethereum loses market share. Many users are turning to blockchains that are easier to use. According to Nansen CEO Alex Svanevik, Ethereum is no longer the clear leader in crypto.

“Three or four years ago, I thought Ethereum would dominate,” he said. “But now, that no longer seems true.”

As other networks grow, Ethereum must adapt. Simplifying the protocol may be the best way to keep developers and users engaged.

Learning from Bitcoin’s Minimalism

Vitalik Buterin sees Bitcoin as a great example. Its simple design has helped it remain stable and secure. He believes Ethereum should follow that path.

By removing unnecessary parts, Ethereum can become easier to use and less expensive to maintain. Ethereum simplification could reduce fragmentation, improve infrastructure, and attract more users. These changes are not just technical — they are about returning to the core mission of blockchain.

Simplicity makes systems stronger. That is why Buterin wants to bring it back to Ethereum.
