On April 24, 2025, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that there are currently no ongoing trade negotiations with the United States. This announcement comes in response to recent statements from U.S. officials suggesting potential de-escalation in the trade conflict. Beijing emphasized that meaningful dialogue requires the U.S. to cease its “extreme pressure” tactics, including the imposition of high tariffs and public threats, which China views as incompatible with constructive negotiations.

Despite U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s remarks about possible de-escalation and President Trump’s claims of active negotiations, China maintains that no formal talks are underway. Beijing insists that any future discussions must be based on mutual respect and equality, without coercive measures.

The ongoing trade tensions have led to significant economic repercussions, including increased tariffs on both sides and disruptions in global markets. China has responded to U.S. tariffs with its own measures and has warned other countries against making trade agreements with the U.S. that could undermine Chinese interests.
