Tesla Scales Back Cybertruck Production Amid Sluggish Demand

Tesla has reportedly reduced its production targets for the Cybertruck at its Gigafactory in Texas, according to employees familiar with the matter. Some production lines are operating at a fraction of their previous capacity, and several Cybertruck teams have been downsized by over half. Since January 2025, workers have been reassigned from the Cybertruck line to the Model Y line, with some expressing concern over apparent workforce reductions.

In Q1 2025, Tesla sold only 6,406 Cybertrucks—half the previous quarter—despite over one million reservations and less than 50,000 deliveries to date. In April, Tesla unveiled its cheapest version of the truck, a $69,990 rear-wheel-drive variant.

Tesla’s overall sales have also been trending downward, with a 13% year-over-year delivery drop in Q1. These setbacks come amid growing competitive pressure, public demonstrations, and a 40% year-to-date stock decline, though shares remain 53% higher than the previous year.

CEO Elon Musk has vowed to double U.S. vehicle production within two years. Additionally, Tesla is using performance reviews to identify essential roles, cutting some staff accordingly.
